Whilst researching a forthcoming project I discovered just how many seminal hip-hop logo's have been designed by Eric Haze.

From his biography: Born and raised in New York City, Eric Haze has been making his impact felt in the worlds of art, product and graphic design for over 30 years. After spending the early 80's on the front lines of the downtown New York art scene, Haze opened his design studio in 1986, becoming one of the first visual artists to define the look and graphic language of Hip Hop during it's golden years. Some of his most classic works include designs for Public Enemy, EPMD, LL Cool J, and the Beastie Boys.

Peepshow Collective

I'm very excited to announce details of Peepshow's first book, 'Peepshow Collective' will be published in February by Index book with design by Studio EMMI.

Peepshow has achieved a rare alchemy: corralling a set of unique visual talents into a cohesive, and hugely influential, collective. Over the past decade, the London based group have worked across illustration, animation,set design, textiles and art direction for such clients as the Victoria & Albert Museum, M&C Saatchi, BBC, The New York Times and SHOWstudio, while also creating their own work for books, exhibitions and events worldwide. They’ve represented the best of British image-making at expos for The British Council and The Museum of Modern Art in Japan, and have featured in shows at the ICA, the Hayward Gallery and Somerset House. Despite, or because of, their focus on the individual, Peepshow as a group have become a force to be reckoned with. Instead of fitting themselves into a preexisting mould, the ten members have together created their own market. This book is a chance to delve into the Peepshow imagination, scanning collective and individual work from the past decade and glimpsing future directions. I've completed work on a silkscreen poster promoting Channel 4 News for the good folks at New Studio London. New editorials for Wired and Out Magazines in the USA and currently in the midst of something a bit different for Creative Review working with master photographer Stephen Lenthall. 2012 will be a big Peepshow year with the publication of our first book in April and something rather BIG lined up easter time. Whilst flicking through the racks of a soho record shop recently I came across bit of a blast from the past, 'The Hits of House', takes me right back to the late 80's when I was buying my first records. I very rarely buy a record purely for the sleeve but did this time, not that the music is bad, far from it. How could you resist a record with S-Express, Nitro Deluxe, Bomb the Bass and The Wee Papa Girl Rappers all in one place? The sleeve is by Main Artery and turns out they've designed an enormous amount of record sleeves over the last 25 years, including most of the late 80's Stock, Aitken & Waterman output. More here.

I've donated a silkscreen print to The 100 Project, an initiative supporting young artistic talent in East London. Each week, a piece of original art will be auctioned with a starting price of £100. The goal is to raise enough money to get 100 children through the doors of The Prince’s Drawing School.

Spencer & Lucy from Peepshow are also involved alongside James Joyce, Milton Glaser, Paul Davis, Tom Gauld, Damien Hirst and many many more. The website launches (and bidding commences) on 27th July.

Details of 'A Liar's Autobiography' are slowly being revealed, and im proud to say Peepshow are one of sixteen animation studios working on sections of the feature length stereoscopic 3D animated film alongside our friends at Trunk, Treat, Not to Scale, Beakus and many more.

'A Liar's Autobiography' is based on the memoir of Monty Python's Graham Chapman and features the voices of surviving Python members Terry Jones, Michael Palin, John Cleese and Terry Gilliam. It will be released in Spring 2012.

Escada Tests

I seem to have been working on a lot of projects this year that you either can't talk about because they make you sign a bit of paper, things that aren't out yet or simply may never come out because they are tests. This is one of the latter. I've been working on a new series of tests for Escada Perfume with Grey in Paris after an initial round of tests in 2009. Everything went off in a completely different direction after I did these simple figurative tests combing photography with ink in water so I think it's ok to post on here.

Bit of a busy few weeks preparing for the forthcoming Peepshow exhibition at Somerset House. 'Pick Me Up' is the first contemporary graphic art fair in the UK. Peepshow will have a selection of nice prints, books and objects for sale as well as running a print workshop on certain days where you can use pre-made blocks designed by the Peepshow team to create a one off relief print. My Career So Far.....

I'm interviewed in the latest issue of Computer Arts Magazine (Issue 133) for a regular feature 'My Career So Far', choosing eight pieces of work from the last ten years and discussing them. In the shops now.

Here's the pieces I chose and why.

2001 - 'Deface the Face-Madonna'. Client: The Face/HHCL/Tango.
I was working in record shop at the time of this piece. I was asked to be a judge for a competition run by the Face magazine to re-interpret a Face cover, and created this as an example of what you could do. It's a very early example of me using my first Mac with hand sprayed scanned material, just working out what you could and couldn't do by accident. It has lots of fake drop shadows and photoshop lens flares…oh yeah!

2002 - Notorious B.I.G. Client: The Source
My first commission when I signed with Art Department in the US was this portrait of Biggie Smalls. I'm bit of a hip hop fan, so this was an honour. I painted on the canvas digitally, scanning artwork separately so I had full control over every part. The process has improved, but continues to this day.

2004 - 'Access'. Client: Wire Design
While making really bright portraits of hip hop stars, I also created this illustration for a book by a design company. They weren't paying so you could do what you liked. It was my first photo collage, and influenced lots of other similar projects. I was working with McFaul and others on Black Convoy at the time.

2005 'BBC 1Xtra Hip Hop Weekend'. Client: Blue Source
This ran on posters on the Tube promoting the radio station in 2005. The height of my mental photoshop documents stage, it had hundreds of layers and represents a progression from what I had started with the Biggie portrait three years earlier.

2007 - 'Kylie Minogue', Client: The Observer Music Monthly
This is from the run I did for the Observer Music Magazine a few years ago which included portraits of lots of people including the Arctic Monkeys, Prince and Rihanna. This Kylie image is my favourite and the pinnacle of this style of work. I realised shortly after that I couldn't do much else with it and developed a new style.

2007 - 'Isolation', Client: Sound In Print
I created this piece in 2007 for a book that to my knowledge didn't ever actually come out, which is shame. I made it by carving up photos of UK shopping centres and playing around with perspective, before finally making use of some of the cubism lectures I endured years of at college.

2008 - 'ASOS', Client: The Telegraph
A lot of the work I made when I started out commercially was spraypaint-based: this came out of not being allowed to silkscreen print at college because I wasn't from the fine art department. But I was definetely starting to move away from the urban spraypaint thing by 2008. This project ran full-page in the Telegraph and was one of the first versions of the two colour collages thatI've been doing a lot of recently. It's nice to be given a bunch of photos, and make work relatively quickly.

2009 - 'Arctic', Personal Work.
A personal project, this one was created to go alongside a number of other collages for a Peepshow exhibition that we held back in the summer of 2009. It was the first piece of work that I'd made in ten years completely unaided by a computer.

2009 - 'Billion Dollar Bubble', Client: The Financial Times.
It's interesting how the style of work determines the clients you work for. Three years ago with all the ink and spraypaint it was music related briefs and clients; now with this new collage work it's mainly business magazines. This project ran on the Financial Times cover last year and is a development of the photo collage style I've been working on for the last few years with a very limited palette.

I was up at the marvellous Print Club in Dalston today at a silkscreen workshop, brushing up on my poor skills from years back. It was a lovely day, very informative and highly recommended, thanks to Kate and master printmaker Fred for all the help. You can sign up for the Print Club Beginners Workshop here. I produced an A5 print in an edition of 50 which I think I'll give away with the next Peepshow Quarterly, we shall see.

I was down at 72 Rivington Street this evening at the home of YCN presenting Peepshow's favourite five book titles for the lending library alongside Luke Best, Andrew Rae and Chrissie Macdonald. My choice was 'Come Alive! The Spirited Art of Sister Corita' by Julie Ault. The amazing typographic silkscreen work of a Catholic Nun in the sixties. Thanks to Alex for getting us involved.

I've spent the last three weeks frantically illustrating for the likes of Mens Health in the USA, The Telegraph here in London, a whole bunch of stuff for The Financial Times (including a forthcoming weekend supplement cover), some packaging for Qualcomm with MiresBall in San Diego and a cover for The University of West Scotland with Freight Design in Glasgow. Phew!
